About Me
I am Jen Burke – CEO and janitor of the San Francisco design firm Industry. I often also answer to the titles of visual designer, brand specialist, information architect, site developer, theme builder, programmer, writer, editor, and accessibility compliance expert. My favorite title is team member. Over the years I have had the honor of working on large and ambitious projects where the sum is truly bigger than the parts. I am also entirely content realizing inner visions in blissful isolation. I enjoy working both wide — across all aspects of a project — and deep — bringing a wealth of visual design education, expertise, and talent to the table. At heart, I am a problem solver and a dot connector striving for clarity in communication. My work has been characterized as elegant, precise, witty, and timeless.
Jen Burke has a Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the Rhode Island School of Design, a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Design from the University of California, Berkeley, and deep professional design experience in all aspects of the field. Prior to founding Industry, she was a visual information designer on projects for the USDA, the World Bank, and — while living in Tokyo — major multinational companies. In her spare time she is an award-winning amateur recipe developer (Scharffen Berger, Old Farmer’s Almanac, Vegetarian Times), a writer on matters grammatical, and a data science student in BerkeleyX Data8. An arts-based education activist, she serves on the board of Friends of Ruth Asawa School of the Arts, a nonprofit foundation dedicated to championing arts education and arts-based learning in San Francisco’s public schools.
